They say Joy is found in small places. I find this to be true… usually. But what do you do when you no longer see the joy in your life? How do you find the path back to joy?
I recently was devoid of joy. Several weeks after the completion of my first ever marathon I was lackluster. For a block of at least two weeks I could not see the joy in my life. I wasn't particularly depressed or despondent – I just wasn't my "usual" joyful self.
I first tried ignoring it. I wrote it off by telling myself, "Well of course, there is bound to be a letdown after having accomplished such a huge goal – all you have to do is get another BHAG (Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal), that'll buck you up!" I also was perfectly willing to blame it on, let's see, pre-menstrual, peri-menopausal, lowered immunity system, feeling that I had a hole in my life, oh, and so many more reasons!
I then took a good honest look at it. And saw I was stuck in looking outside myself – in things that were not completely in my control – to find the answer of my not having Joy. OK, so I'm a coach and I "should" know better, but still…. Isn't so much easier to look for "somewhere else" to explain our emotional states? I needed to "go inside", explore my inner landscape to see what was really there: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
I gave myself permission to stop striving and just rest. No more looking for my next Big Goal to keep me motivated. Just Be with myself, in gentle loving care, with tender regard for my humanness, and with an open heart. Meditate, walk, dream, dance, Qigong, drum, play with art, sing, and be with Nature; these were gifts I gave myself, and I savored them.
The first step is being able to give and receive, gracefully and with love. This is foundational to discovering your Path Back to Joy. I was then ready for the work of getting real, creating a vision that sings to my heart, and a plan of action that I can't help but do. With help from others, I have found my path – and I can't wait to share this path-building process with others.
So how's your Joy? On the Joy-o-meter scale of 0 to 10, where are you right now? Where's the biggest hole in your life? What is it that you don't want to look at too closely? What scares you into supreme wakefulness in the middle of the night?
Do an honest evaluation. I encourage you to take a look… go ahead… just take a moment to be still long enough to really see inside yourself. What fears do you hold right now, that if dissolved, would increase your ability to live a joyful life? How much do you want a joyful life? And, are you ready to do the spiritual and inner work that it takes? If you are ready, give yourself the gift of coaching.
Joy is found in small places. And it's also found in the expansive space of possibilities. If you have fears, walls, and blockages constructed all around you, how can you see past these to the small places? How can you see the spacious expanse of possibilities before you? How can you see the gift to the world that is you? The choice is yours -- only you can pull these walls down and build yourself a joyful life. And I can help you on your journey.
